Input Tax Credit (ITC) Eligibility and Conditions for Taking ITC In the Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime, Input Tax Credit (ITC) allows businesses to claim credit for the tax they pay on inputs (goods and services) used in their business operations. This helps reduce the cascading effect of taxes, i.e., tax on tax, and makes the tax system more efficient. Eligibility for ITC To claim Input Tax Credit, the following conditions must be met: Registered Taxpayer: The taxpayer must be registered under GST. This can be a normal taxpayer, a casual taxpayer, or a special economic zone (SEZ) developer. Possession of Tax Invoice or Debit Note: The taxpayer must have a valid tax invoice or debit note issued by a registered supplier. Without this documentation, the credit cannot be claimed. Receipt of Goods or Services: The goods or services for which ITC is claimed must be received by the taxpayer. The ITC can only be claimed if the goods or services have actually been received.
