
Technological and Industrial Disasters Types and causes of industrial disasters Industrial disasters are serious accidents or incidents that occur due to failures in industrial processes, equipment, or human error, often resulting in injury, environmental damage, or loss of life. They are often categorized under technological disasters, which are caused by human-made systems failing rather than natural events. Types of Industrial Disasters 1. Chemical Disasters These involve the release of toxic chemicals or hazardous substances. Example : Bhopal Gas Tragedy (India, 1984) – methyl isocyanate leak. Consequences : Poisoning, long-term health issues, environmental pollution. 2. Nuclear Disasters Caused by radiation leaks from nuclear power plants or other facilities. Example : Chernobyl (Ukraine, 1986), Fukushima (Japan, 2011). Consequences : Radiation sickness, cancer, genetic mutations, large-scale displacement. 3. Explosions and Fires Can happen due to gas leaks, pressure build-ups, or flammable material mishandling. Example : Texas City Refinery Explosion (USA, 2005). Consequences : Deaths, injuries, infrastructure damage. 4. Structural Failures Failure of buildings, dams, bridges, etc., often due to poor design, material fatigue, or overload. Example : Rana Plaza Collapse (Bangladesh, 2013). Consequences : Mass casualties, economic loss. 5. Mining Disasters Caused by explosions, cave-ins, or toxic gas leaks in mines. Example :
