Introduction To Banking

Introduction to Banking History and Evolution of Banking What is Banking? Banking refers to the business of accepting deposits, lending money, and providing financial services such as wealth management, currency exchange, and safe deposit boxes. Banks serve as financial intermediaries between depositors who supply capital and borrowers who demand capital. 1. Origins of Banking Ancient Banking (2000 BCE – 500 CE) The earliest forms of banking can be traced back to ancient Mesopotamia, Egypt, and Babylon. Temples and palaces acted as the first banks, offering safekeeping for grain and valuables. In ancient Greece and Rome, moneylenders and bankers (called argentarii in Rome) emerged, handling deposits and loans and facilitating currency exchange. 2. Medieval Banking (500 – 1500 CE) With the decline of the Roman Empire, much of banking activity moved to monasteries and merchant families . The Medici family in Florence and other wealthy merchants in Venice developed letters of credit , bills of exchange , and early bookkeeping systems . These innovations enabled international trade and laid the foundation for modern banking. 3. Renaissance to Early Modern Banking (1500 – 1800) Bank of Amsterdam (1609): One of the first "modern" banks that offered deposit, transfer, and currency exchange services.
