Course Overview

Introduction To Yoga

Introduction to Yoga History and origin of yoga Yoga is an ancient practice that combines physical postures, breathing techniques, meditation, and ethical disciplines to promote harmony between the mind, body, and spirit. The word "yoga" is derived from the Sanskrit root "yuj," meaning "to yoke" or "to unite," symbolizing the union of the individual self with the universal consciousness. Historical Origins Pre-Vedic and Vedic Periods (Before 1500 BCE): The earliest signs of yogic practices date back over 5,000 years, with references found in ancient texts and archaeological findings from the Indus Valley Civilization. Seals depicting meditative postures suggest early forms of yoga. Upanishadic Period (800–200 BCE): The Upanishads , philosophical texts that form the core of Indian spirituality, emphasized meditation and introspection. Concepts like Atman (soul) and Brahman (universal spirit) laid the foundation for yogic thought. Classical Period (200 BCE–500 CE): This era saw the formalization of yoga philosophy. Patanjali , a sage, compiled the Yoga Sutras , a key text that outlines the Eight Limbs of Yoga (Ashtanga Yoga) , which include ethical practices, postures ( asanas ), breath control ( pranayama ), and meditation. Post-Classical and Medieval Period (500–1500 CE): Various schools of yoga emerged, including Hatha Yoga
