
Structural Carpentry and Framing Basics of Framing and Construction What is Structural Carpentry? Structural carpentry is the branch of carpentry that focuses on building the framework of structures such as houses, decks, and other buildings. It involves using wood (or engineered lumber) to create load-bearing components that support the structure. Basic Framing Components Sill Plate The bottom horizontal member of a wall or building to which vertical members are attached. Anchored to the foundation. Studs Vertical framing members in a wall. Typically spaced 16" or 24" on center (O.C.). Top Plate The top horizontal member of a wall frame. Supports ceiling joists or trusses above. Bottom Plate (Sole Plate) Horizontal member at the base of the wall studs. Headers Beams over doors and windows that carry the load around the opening. Joists Horizontal framing members used for floors and ceilings. Rafters Sloped framing members that form the roof structure. Sheathing Plywood or OSB (oriented strand board) panels attached to exterior walls, floors, and roofs to provide rigidity and a nailing surface.
