The human body uses three main energy systems to produce ATP, depending on the intensity and duration of the activity: 1. ATP-PC System (Phosphagen System) Duration : 0–10 seconds Intensity : Very high (e.g., sprinting, heavy lifting) Fuel Source : Stored ATP and phosphocreatine (PC) Location : Cytoplasm ATP Yield : 1 ATP per PC molecule Key Features : Fastest ATP production Does not require oxygen Limited by small stores of ATP and PC 2. Anaerobic Glycolysis (Lactic Acid System) Duration : 10 seconds to ~2 minutes Intensity : High (e.g., 400m sprint, high-intensity interval training) Fuel Source : Glucose/glycogen (carbohydrates) Location : Cytoplasm ATP Yield : 2 ATP per glucose Key Features : Moderate speed of ATP production Does not require oxygen Produces lactic acid (which can contribute to fatigue) 3. Aerobic System (Oxidative Phosphorylation) Duration : >2 minutes Intensity : Low to moderate (e.g., jogging, long-distance cycling) Fuel Sources : Carbohydrates (glucose/glycogen) Fats (fatty acids) Proteins (amino acids, in prolonged exercise) Location : Mitochondria ATP Yield : ~36 ATP
