
Statistical Inference and Estimation Concept of Estimation What is Statistical Inference? Statistical inference is the process of drawing conclusions about a population based on data from a sample. Since we usually can't collect data from an entire population, we use a smaller sample to make educated guesses (inferences). What is Estimation? Estimation is one of the main tools of statistical inference. It means using sample data to guess or approximate an unknown population value (like the average height of all students in a university). There are two main types of estimation: 1. Point Estimation: This gives us a single value as an estimate of the population parameter. Example: You survey 50 students and find their average height is 5'8". You use this number to estimate the average height of all students. 2. Interval Estimation: This gives us a range of values within which the population parameter is likely to lie. Example: Instead of saying the average height is 5'8", you might say it's likely between 5'7" and 5'9", to account for uncertainty. Why Do We Estimate?
